4. Frost - Mr Frost (1990)

The idea of a Jeff Goldblum led serial killer movie now might be wonderful news (if he was playing it for Wes Anderson perhaps), but neither now nor in 1990 was the actor right to play Satan himself manifested as a cold-hearted, long-haired murderer.

As the fore-name-less Mr Frost, Goldblum tries his damnedest to be malevolent and devilish in a way that the likes of Al Pacino would later master easily in Devil's Advocate. Unlike Goldblum's performance, Pacino played the Devil as a d*ck-swinging, smarmy lech whose power is irresistibly intoxicating, and that's precisely why it works a hell of a lot more.

Goldblum is just too locked into his performance brand: he still adds in his pregnant pauses in the middle of sentences, he's still odd and quirky but he plays it way too seriously. And it almost feels like his trademark comedy would have suited the character perfectly.
