Jigsaw Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

1. The Terrific Gore Effects

Jigsaw Ryan
Lionsgate

Though the gore is decidedly dialled down in this instalment, the little that's there is well-executed for the most part. The glimpse of a head sliced in half, for instance, is stomach-churningly detailed and has clearly had more money poured into it than pretty much any prosthetic effect in any of the prior movies.

There's also one hilariously over-the-top gore sequence in the third act that, though largely achieved through CGI, lacks the cheesiness of some of the earlier movies' cheap-looking effects, and is generally a good deal more convincing.

Again, there's not enough of it, but what's there feels visceral and genuinely intense.
