John Cusack: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

5 Awesome Performances...

5. Rob Gordon - High Fidelity

Nick Hornby's mega-selling music appreciation text relocated from London to Chicago, in turn gifting Cusack with one of his most memorable roles of the noughties. As unlucky in love records owner, Rob Gordon, Cusack is given plenty of dialogue space to throw out some assured observations regarding the female of the species, as he makes it his goal to link up with his ex girlfriends to find out where he went so wrong. Director Stephen Frears plays to the novel's strength and allows Cusack to break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience, and against the backdrop of a truly killer soundtrack - it's all about the 13th Floor Elevators - resulting in a rare thing: an adapation that actually lends something new to its source material.
