John Travolta: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

From the man who brought you both Pulp Fiction and Battlefield Earth...

Many actors tend to drift through their careers somewhat consistently, occasionally peaking with a memorable performance that earns plaudits, and occasionally putting in a sub-par showing that's criticised. For the most part, they'll simply tick along nicely, perhaps lucking out with a perfect role now and again, or sometimes choosing a part that simply didn't suit them. But John Travolta is something else. No matter what movie he finds himself in, he's an actor that always stands out. Unfortunately, that's not always a compliment. Having been in the movie business for an astonishing 40 years, Travolta hasn't simply ambled on by playing typecast characters and easy-fitting roles. No, Travolta has gone for every kind of part imaginable - lurching between heartthrobs, villains, loan sharks, dance teachers, and even changing gender (in the instance of Hairspray). There's something admirable about the way Travolta takes such huge risks with the roles he takes, but as is so often the case with any leap of faith, the result is usually either spectacular or disastrous. Given his desire to be versatile, along with the amount of time he's spent in Hollywood, Travolta has managed to produce an enormous amount of acting work that's often either gloriously charming or absolute dreck - and rarely anything in between. To celebrate the re-release of Grease in UK cinemas this Valentine's weekend, Travolta is the latest actor to run through the gauntlet of 5 awesome performance and 5 that sucked...
