John Williams: His 20 Best Film Scores

18. Star Wars: Episode II €“ The Attack Of The Clones (2002)

https://youtu.be/kORguInD9MM The second film in George Lucas' prequel trilogy was criticised by critics and many fans, but John Williams once again turned in a fantastic score. The most famous track by far is the love theme, "Across the Stars," which rivals "Leia's Theme" and "Han Solo and the Princess" in terms of sheer musical splendor. Unfortunately, the onscreen couple it represented left something to be desired. But despite of the quality of the film, the score captures the essence of the Star Wars universe with moments of soaring beauty, quiet reflection, dark foreshadowing, and high-paced action. Highlight tracks include: "Love Theme from Attack of the Clones (Across the Stars)," "Zam the Assassin and The Chase Through Coruscant," "Yoda and the Younglings," "Return to Tatooine," "Love Pledge and the Arena," and "Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale."

17. War Horse (2011)

http://youtu.be/F3f-2wmDBJs The music to Steven Spielberg's War Horse mirrors the incredible journey of a boy and his horse through World War I. The pastoral quality of the first third of the score quickly turns to a pounding and pulsing representation of the horrors of war. Finally, a world-weary and somber sentiment rounds out the score. The progression of the score itself helps tell the story. The standout track is "Plowing," which builds methodically to a stunning and poignant orchestral crescendo. There are hints of the climax throughout the piece, but the eventual payoff is truly amazing. Highlight tracks include: "Dartmoor, 1912," "Plowing," "Pulling the Cannon," and "The Reunion."
