John Williams: His 20 Best Film Scores

16. Star Wars: Episode I €“ The Phantom Menace (1999)

http://youtu.be/qzVBqBosf5w The highly anticipated return of George Lucas to the Star Wars universe didn't satisfy all the fan expectations, but John Williams didn't miss a beat. While the prequel scores are not quite at the level of the classic music for the original trilogy, they are outstanding in their own right. Williams did not hang his hat on themes from the previous films; almost all the new music contains fresh ideas. The choral magnificence and pulse-pounding orchestration in "Duel of the Fates" deservedly gets much the attention, but the tender theme for Anakin, the forceful march for the flag parade, and the distinctive music for the droid invasion all contribute to a successful entry in the Star Wars music pantheon. Highlight tracks include: "Duel of the Fates," "Anakin's Theme," "The Arrival at Tatooine and The Flag Parade," "The Droid Invasion and The Appearance of Darth Maul," and "The High Council Meeting and Qui-Gon's Funeral."

15. The Terminal (2004)

http://youtu.be/UZWRlNQJCcE This is one of John Williams' most underrated and under-heard scores, and that is a shame. Spielberg's film The Terminal is a comedy with some touching dramatic moments and Williams' score perfectly captures the competing and conflicting emotions present in the film. The main theme, "The Tale of Viktor Navorski," is one of Williams' most musically complex and satisfyingly genre-bending compositions. The instrumentation in the piece is varied, it has a surprising orchestral power, and the melody is infectious. Don't miss the fitting anthem for a fictional Eastern European country, the buoyant music in "A Legend is Born," or the stirring track "The Fountain Scene." Highlight tracks include: "The Tale of Viktor Navorski," "A Legend Is Born," "The Fountain Scene," "Krakozhia National Anthem and Homesickness," and "A Happy Navorski Ending."
