At some point, Depp's general shtick of playing pantomime caricatures in weird films was going to wear thin and he'd become a parody of himself. Some might say that happened when he continued playing Jack Sparrow after the films stopped being good, others might say it was when he befouled the Mad Hatter for Tim Burton, but it was really when he tried his damnedest to make Mortdecai work.

Unfortunately for him, the film was from a completely different time (when the Ealing comedy was king), and it wouldn't even have been good in that context.

Depp attempted to make something akin to a Pink Panther movie dropped into a modern period, focused around a central art heist, but the script isn't funny enough and Depp's wild caricature sticks out like a sore thumb. He lacks the comedy to balance his lack of restraint and the end result feels more like a parlour comedy you might see from a sixth form school troupe with that one kid who thinks he's destined for stardom.

And there's a reason he's now in middle management at a paper firm.
