Johnny Depp: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Dean Corso - The Ninth Gate

The Ninth Gate

Johnny Depp being paired with Roman Polanski; what could possibly go wrong? A surprising amount, going by their woefully dull supernatural thriller The Ninth Gate, which has Depp playing Dean Corso, a man searching for a book that can apparently be used to summon the Devil.

Despite the interesting premise, which should make for a disturbing, creepy little thriller, this one barely registers a pulse - as is uncommon for both Polanski and Depp - and feels nothing like the director's other major satanic work, Rosemary's Baby.

Despite working with such an acclaimed director, one can't get the feeling that Depp is particularly excited about it, delivering a soporific performance that earned the actor some of the worst reviews of his career, even if the movie did end up turning a profit.
