Johnny Depp: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
3. Kemp - The Rum Diary
Here's a film, however, that certainly didn't make anyone any money, raking back a mere $24 million against a budget reportedly double that. Despite the promise of some sexiness by way of Depp having a dalliance with the vivacious Amber Heard, this one failed to draw in audiences, likely because of its niche subject matter, which had Depp playing the plucky protagonist in Hunter S. Thompson's titular novel.
Essentially following along similar lines as his Raoul Duke from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Depp plays a writer prone to manic episodes, though the craziness just isn't anywhere near as pronounced or memorable, and the film is utterly, utterly forgettable as a result.
It'd be difficult to appreciate that this was a passion project for Depp when he seems to have put such little effort into bringing it to life. Just soulless.
