Jojo Rabbit Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
6. Scarlett Johansson Steals The Show
Scarlett Johansson may be picking up heaps of critical praise for her magnificent performance in Marriage Story, but in addition to her inevitable Best Actress Oscar nomination for that film, it's entirely possible she'll also receive a Best Supporting Actress nod for her marvelous work here.
As Jojo's mother Rosie, Johansson paints a picture of calm restraint under immense turmoil, and of a loving mother desperate to prevent her son from giving in to the darkness that surrounds him.
Johansson has always been a massively talented actress, and though she's not had too many roles in recent years that stretched her dramatically, it's great to see her taking on such ambitious gigs now that her MCU tenure appears to be basically over.
In a film jam-packed with remarkable performances, she's the easy standout, ensuring the story never loses sight of its humanity.
