8. The Shot Choices Make It Look Legitimately Gorgeous

One thing that you'd rarely accuse comic book movies of being is overly focused on cinematography. They're generally more concerned with character work and plot and very few of them consciously try much in terms of visual artistry (aside for the films that have tried to emulate comic strip aesthetics like Ang Lee's Hulk and Avengers: Infinity War's splash-page shots).

Looking at Joker, it looks nothing like a comic book movie. Visually, it owes a lot more to Martin Scorsese's work - which adds context to the desire to have him involved - and the shot choices in this trailer make it look like a real work of art. Considering this has been made by Todd Phillips - the most unexpected of sources for this sort of material - it's even more impressive that it looks this beautiful.
