Joss Whedon Says Agent Coulson Is Still Dead In The Movies

Mental Floss, Whedon drove a stake between Marvel's movies and their TV spin-offs. "The Coulson thing was, I think, a little anomalous," he said, "just because that really came from the television division, which is sort of considered to be its own subsection of the Marvel universe." With its own rules for life and death? Whedon then delivered the killer blow. "As far as the fiction of the movies, Coulson is dead." The supposed continuity between big screen and small is ripped asunder... at least in the eyes of Joss Whedon. I don't know if we'd hear Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb saying the same thing, though I hope somebody provokes him with this quote as soon as possible. And what is "sort of considered" anyway? Sort of considered by who? By the fans who have been asked to accept that, actually, everything Marvel are doing in live action forms one great big whole? Surely lots of them are going to be pretty ticked off if it all just crumbles into pieces? Whedon went on to talk about how the decision to resurrect Coulson, which he seemed to be 100% behind when announcing it at 2012's New York Comic Con, undermines the dramatic effect of The Avengers. "Watching it with my kids and watching Coulson die but , 'Yeah, but I know that he kind of isn€™t,' it did take some of the punch out of it for me." Me too, Joss. The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be in UK cinemas one week from today, on April 23rd, even if Agent Coulson most definitely won't. The US release is just over a week later on May 1st.
