Jungle Cruise Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Totally Pedestrian Script

Watching Jungle Cruise, one gets the feeling that the script was basically created by a Disney algorithm to be as appealing to as wide an audience as possible.

It is a completely inoffensive and affable movie as written, but is also far too keen to cling to the narrative beats and character traits which have succeeded in other, superior adventure movies.

Beyond the (mostly) familiar plot, the dialogue lacks the pep and zing which would enhance the electric chemistry between Johnson and Blunt's protagonists.

There's not really a single memorable line of dialogue in the entire movie, beyond some of Johnson's wilfully cringe-worthy dad jokes at least.

With five people credited for the story and script, it might well be a case of the film lacking one prevailing vision, the writers instead delivering a script that's broad to a fault.
