Jurassic Park 4: 10 Ways To Save The Franchise

8. Stick To What Works

Whatever the plot ends up being, it needs to stick to the tried and tested formula of the original. The second film opted for ambition by travelling outside the confines of the island, and the third film introduced too many goofy elements; both results were extremely underwhelming, and didn't capture the most exhilarating element of the first film - the thrill of the chase. The excitement of the first film stems primarily from the tension of these people being hunted by unpredictable creatures more dangerous than anything they've ever encountered in their lives. The suspense is palpable in just about every single scene once the disaster kicks off, a testament to both the livewire script and Steven Spielberg's pitch-perfect direction. Perhaps denying ambition isn't the most encouraging thing to hear, but JP4 could be an excellent film without needing to push the boat out too far. We don't need human-dino hybrids who can fire guns (as was one of the earlier rejected ideas) nor any fancy new gimmicks; just people running for their lives against awesome dinosaurs will be enough to satisfy most.
