Jurassic World: 10 Obscure References You Totally Missed

2. The T-Rex Destroys The Spinosaurus Skeleton To Pay For Jurassic Park III

The Reference: One of Jurassic World's Easter eggs that everybody spotted in the trailers and other prerelease material was a skeleton of a Spinosaurus in the main strip of the park. This is (thankfully) the only reference to Jurassic Park III, widely regarded as the worst movie in the franchise. The skeleton pops up again during the film's climax, when the T-Rex smashes through it to charge at the Indominus Rex. What It Really Means: The T-Rex smashing through the Spinosaurus skeleton isn't just the new film metaphorically trashing the threequel, but also righting one of its major wrongs. Very early on in Jurassic Park III, the Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus have a showdown, which, after a lacklustre trading of blows, sees the latter come out victorious. This naturally annoyed a lot of fans - how can a Jurassic movie so flippantly do away with the best dinosaur ever? - so destroying the statue here is giving fans a spiritual version of what they wanted to see way back in 2001.
