Zack Snyder wasn't exactly treated particularly well by Warner Bros., and while his daughter's tragic death was used to explain why he handed the reigns over to Joss Whedon, the prevailing theory is that was used as an excuse of sorts to ensure it didn't look like the studio had fired the filmmaker.

After all, it seems they were always planning on having Whedon come in to "fix" Justice League, so no one could blame Snyder for not wanting to be involved with the studio in any way after that. Now, though, he's shed some light on why he agreed to finish his version of the movie for HBO Max.

Explaining that he wanted to keep his promise to the movie's cast, Snyder added: "Toby Emmerich called me to say 'Hey, is this a thing you'd be interested in doing?' and I wasn't ready, but I thought about. One of the big things that got me to say 'all right' to this huge job, it's crazy, but it was that commitment I made to those actors, [so] let's finish this."

"Let me put it back. Let me honor what we talked about creating you know? Because I just, you know, famously I've never seen the theatrical cut of Justice League but I can only imagine that it's not what we talked about." That's pretty admirable, though the demand from fans was no doubt also a factor.
