Kevin Costner: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. The Postman - The Postman

The Postman

And here it is: the one movie that I could not stand. There is really no aspect of this movie that I enjoyed: it is a long, dull, pointless experience.

Set in the post-apocalyptic future, when the governments have disappeared, an army now rules the land, led by General Bethlehem (Will Patton). Kevin Costner plays a wandering nomad who travels from town to town and does one-man Shakespeare plays to make a living. Sounds like a reasonable occupation in a dystopian future!

So, the nomad one day comes across an old bag of mail, and he thinks to himself - €œhey, I think I€™ll be a postman now!€ And he goes to a town to deliver some mail. Long story short, he inspires a rebellion, and his army of postmen eventually challenge General Bethlehem. Here€™s the message I got from this movie: The U.S. Postal Service is so devoted to its customers, not even the end of the world can stop them! Did I really just watch a 3-hour commercial?

And Costner€™s performance is just the icing on the cheese. The postman character is less charismatic than the mariner from Waterworld, which is saying something. He is childish and silly, like a little kid trapped in a grown man€™s body. Yet, at times you will also see him stab someone, attempt to choke a guy, and shoot multiple people. It€™s sort of a creepy combination, if you think about it.

Of the three movies that Costner has directed, this is BY FAR the worst. Open Range, a western, came a few years later. Thank God he redeemed himself with that one. But I€™m still afraid that he€™ll come back and make The Postman 2: Return to Sender. (shudder)

So that about sums up my list of Kevin Costner's best and worst performances. What do you think? Do you agree with my rankings? Leave a comment below, and thanks for reading!
