Kevin Costner: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Mariner - Waterworld

Waterworld

It was a little while after Waterworld came out that I finally saw it, and, due to reactions I heard, I expected a crushing, terrible flop. Really, though, I didn€™t think it was that bad. There were actually some points that I found myself enjoying it. That€™s the one reason why you should always have really low expectations: you will never be disappointed! Don€™t get me wrong, though, Waterworld is by no means a good movie.

Taking place in the year 2500, Kevin Costner stars as a lone mariner, who wants nothing more than to survive in a world that has been completely covered in water, hence the name Waterworld. He is uniquely adapted to this world, since he was born with a set of gills. Just from this initial idea, it is hard not to be at least interested in the movie. From idea to screen, though, is a different story.

As far as Costner€™s performance goes, it€™s hard to explain just why exactly I didn€™t like him. He does not so much as overact, as he just never fully provides us with believable characteristics. Is he an anti-hero? A loner just trying to survive? A bad guy turned good? The mariner never quite fits into any of these archetypes, which makes it hard to care about him. At one point, he tosses a little girl into the ocean. Shortly afterwards, he risks his life trying to save her. Huh?

Waterworld, as I said, is at least passable. And it€™s not nearly as awful as the final movie of this list.
