King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

4. Jude Law Makes For A (Mostly) Uninspired Villain

King Arthur Legend Of The Sword Jude Law
Warner Bros.

From the trailers, it seemed like Jude Law was going to give a legendarily over-the-top, swinging-for-the-fences villainous performance to make Gary Oldman proud, but he actually plays it a lot safer than that.

Though his Vortigern certainly brings the requisite menace and nibbles on the scenery on occasion, his lack of personality ultimately makes him pale in comparison to most of the film's other characters.

It more often than not feels like Law is basically just going through the bad guy motions rather than doing enough to make him the fun mustache-twirler he should be. He doesn't embarrass himself by any means, but so much more could've been done with this part.
