2. A Greater Threat
So if Kong and Godzilla are ultimately headed for a truce, then there has to be a reason. And as is usually the case with giant monster movies, monsters usually team up when a more powerful monster threatens everything. Godzilla has teamed up with many enemies over the years when faced with a larger threat, even humanity, though such an alliance is almost always temporary. This implies that the antagonistic relationship between King Kong and Godzilla is only one aspect of a grander story. Basically, the purpose of King Kong vs. Godzilla is much like that of the upcoming Batman v Superman movie. Just as that film is setting up a greater DC universe, this film is meant to set up a greater kaiju universe. Its not just about the two facing off, but an overarching story that allows more characters to be introduced and build the mythology. Remember, WB and Legendary already have the rights to Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, so their inclusion into the film is entirely possible, if not probable. Now the question is what will be the greater threat? King Ghidorah seems like the obvious choice given his origins and status within the Godzilla franchise, but dont be surprised if an entirely new and original monster is created to fill this role. Either way, its a fun and intriguing possibility that makes the wait for these films all the more difficult to bear.
