King Richard Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Kris Bowers' Energetic Musical Score

Another vital part of the package is a killer musical score from Kris Bowers, who offers up a soundscape that's equal parts an homage to classic sports movies and something very much its energetic own.

It's clear that Bowers has taken some overt cues from Jerry Goldsmith's incredibly Rocky score, particularly in the film's later stages, which are totally successful in amplifying the emotion of Venus' climactic match.

Elsewhere Bowers' emotive piano score anchors the film's more affecting dramatic moments perfectly, not overpowering the performances but complimenting them with restraint.

The Best Original Score field is pretty stacked this year with boundary-pushing efforts from Hans Zimmer (Dune) and Johnny Greenwood (Spencer, The Power of the Dog), so while it may not end up making the final five, it's still damn fine work all the same.
