King Richard Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

2. It Feels A Little Unbalanced

There's already been a lot of hand-wringing about the decision to center the movie around the Williams sisters' father rather than the sisters themselves.

And while the statuesque portrait of the man absolutely justifies that decision, there are times where audiences are sure to wish the sisters were given a greater focus.

The back-half of the film is certainly more outwardly trained on Venus' (Saniyya Sidney) rise to prominence, though Serena (Demi Singleton) is basically a back-seat passenger for most of the story, her future successes - which easily eclipsed those of her older sister - largely relegated to a closing title card.

Obviously there's only so much that screenwriter Zach Baylin could cram into his script, but the first half might've benefitted from a few more scenes with Venus and Serena as the focal figures, while a more cinematic epilogue could've depicted Serena's later triumphs.
