King Richard Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

6. The Williams Sisters Are Magnetic To Watch

King Richard
Warner Bros.

Though their story sometimes feels secondary to their father's, when the focus shifts to Venus in particular in the second half, it's tough to argue with how compellingly the film brings the sisters to life on screen.

This is largely a credit to Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, who give stellar performances as Venus and Serena, capturing the essence of two of the most famous sportswomen of all time.

As Venus, Sidney is especially excellent playing both a prodigious tennis player and a young girl trying not to get swallowed up in the toxic atmosphere of the tennis circuit - an environment her father is extremely reluctant to expose her to.

Singleton meanwhile conveys the frustration of having to stand in her older sister's shadow brilliantly, and while her part is absolutely the lesser of the two, she shares excellent chemistry with her screen sister.

If the two young actresses continue to pursue careers in Hollywood, they've got incredibly promising futures ahead of them.
