King Richard Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

4. It's Riveting Whether You're A Tennis Fan Or Not

Any sports movie that wants a real shot at connecting with the mainstream and even winning Oscars needs to work regardless of your own opinion about the sport.

And King Richard certainly joins the distinguished list of sports films that's tremendously gripping whether you're an avid tennis fan or haven't even watched a single match in your life.

The human interest of the sisters' journey combines with the thrilling cinematic treatment of tennis itself to ensure few will be left unmoved by what is on its own terms just a great story.

This is far from a niche sports film, and while formulaically presented doesn't feel the need to talk down to the audience either, which can be a tricky balance to strike.
