Knives Out Review: 9 Ups & 1 Down

2. Nathan Johnson's Excellent Musical Score

Rian Johnson's cousin Nathan Johnson has composed all-but-one of the director's movies - sitting out The Last Jedi for the sake of John Williams, of course - and returns to deliver a memorably entrancing musical score for his latest.

Like the rest of the movie, Johnson's score is incredibly self-aware, indulging in the suspenseful string work you'd expect for basically any whodunnit film ever, but amping it up with a playful punchiness that's very much its own.

Though the score generally isn't particularly intrusive, it's used well in dramatic peaks and ably cements the tone.
