Knives Out Review: 9 Ups & 1 Down

7. It's A Genuinely Compelling Whodunnit

Knives Out Christopher Plummer
Lionsgate

It would've been easy for Johnson's film to not even bother with establishing an intriguing mystery in its quest for self-awareness, but to his enormous credit, the writer-director has crafted a mystery-thriller that continually tantalises.

Johnson keeps turning the narrative screws in unexpected directions to generate additional mysteries, and even when one is solved, another pops up in its place.

Given that this film could've easily coasted on the charms of its cast and its lavish style, that it's also actually a fantastic whodunnit movie in its own right is what truly takes it to the next level.

This ensures that the film will likely appeal near-equally to unapologetic fans of classic murder-mystery fare and those looking for something fresh to be injected into the moldy genre.
