Kong: Skull Island - 25 Easter Eggs & References You Must See

17. Heart Of Darkness

Kong Skull Island Conrad Marlow
Legendary

Given that almost every Vietnam film is inherently linked to Heart Of Darkness thanks to Apocalypse Now setting the framework, so it should come as no surprise that the Joseph Conrad's seminal novella plays an important part in Kong's make-up.

As a sign-post to that relationship - and as encouragement to link the text's exploration of the inherent human capacity for evil and the dangers of over-reaching human endeavour - Vogt-Roberts named two of his heroes in honour of the book. John C Reilly's Hank Marlow is named for the protagonist of the book (called Charles, rather than Hank), and Tom Hiddleston's James Conrad is obviously a tribute to the author.

It's no surprise either that they are the men who are most aware of the island's - and nature as a whole's - innate darkness.
