Jordan Vogt-Roberts was obviously very keen to make sure he paid homage to as many monster movies as possible: according to him, Brie Larson's character is called Mason Weaver as a tribute to Alien's Sigourney Weaver. If that was supposed to also highlight similarities in the characters, the film didn't really deliver on that front.

You can also definitely see the same camaraderie amongst the Sky Devils squadron that was such a big part of the dynamic between the Colonial Marines in Aliens. They certainly seem to be cut from the same sort of self-aware weirdo/bad-ass cloth.
