At this point in the film, we get a very definite transition from a straight Vietnam flick - all cool soundtracks and slo-mo money shots of helicopters (some of the best cinematography of the entire project) - to a monster movie with the thumping attack.

And it all starts with Kong throwing a tree at the first chopper to go down, which is a reference to a similar scene in 1967's King Kong Escapes. Plus, the moment that sees him throw a boulder at one of the Skull Crawlers is also included in homage to the "classic"...

The same film is the reference point for the scene in which Kong rescues Weaver when she's in mortal danger - just as he did with Susan in King Kong Escapes.
