Kong: Skull Island Review - 6 Ups & 5 Downs

6. Kong Is Awesome

Surprise, surprise, the best thing about this movie is the title character, and that's exactly the way it should be. Though Kong's screen time is typically limited to set-pieces, this isn't like Gareth Edwards' Godzilla: Kong shows up early and frequently without being hidden or obscured.

The sequences of Kong causing havoc and especially fighting other monsters are easily among the movie's highlights, and while this Kong doesn't bring with him the emotional pull present in Peter Jackson's 2005 effort, the creature looks great and will be a fascinating adversary for Godzilla in a few years' time.

As many missteps as the film makes, it nails the most fundamental aspect.
