Kong: Skull Island Review - 6 Ups & 5 Downs

1. The Tone Is Incredibly Weird

This is sure to be one of the weirdest blockbusters of the year, largely because it doesn't really seem to know what it wants to be. Parts of the film are deadly serious and often horrifically violent, and then a gag will come wildly out of left-field in an attempt to lighten the mood.

It rarely works as intended, but more curiously, it makes one wonder exactly what this will mean for Warner Bros' "MonsteVerse" moving forward. After all, 2014's Godzilla took itself incredibly seriously for the most part, whereas Kong is much sillier in tone, so will one of the characters change their mood for the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie, or will they attempt to meet somewhere in the tonal middle?

It's an interesting challenge moving forward and not beyond reconciling, but as for this movie, it just feels like it's got a bit of an identity crisis going on.
