Kong: Skull Island Trailer: 8 Things You Might Have Missed

1. Project Monarch

You'd be forgiven if you didn't know about that Godzilla vs. Kong movie that's slated for 2020. It's hardly been highly publicized, and 2014's Godzilla - a movie that will lead into the epic match-up - isn't exactly stacked with references to the giant ape.

But, with Kong: Skull Island, the pieces are finally starting to fall into place.

Chief among these is John Goodman's character, William 'Bill' Randa. The trailer reveals that he was already aware of Kong's existence, and he should be, because he's a member of 'Project Monarch', the organization from Godzilla that investigates these mythical creatures and giant beasts, and is represented by Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins in that film.

Warner Bros and Legendary Studios intend to create a cinematic monster universe centered around Project Monarch, which will be the connective tissue that ties each movie together. The ultimate aim of the organisation has not yet been revealed - John Goodman seems to have sinister intentions, willing to sacrifice innocent lives to gather proof that Kong exists, so it could be a simple case of 'the government wants to create a weapon' - but right now, it's not clear.

One thing that is clear is that Monarch will have a major role to play in uniting the two monsters for their incoming showdown. They drove the plot of Godzilla forward and it looks like Skull Island will use them in a similar manner - so hopefully we see this cinematic universe begin to take shape when Kong leaps into action next March.
