Lightyear Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. Zurg Is An Underwhelming Villain

Lightyear Zurg

Lightyear's villain is of course Buzz's iconic arch-nemesis from the Toy Story movies - yet who is ultimately revealed to be his father in the second film - Emperor Zurg.

Without giving too much away, fans may think they know where Zurg's portrayal in this film is going, but Pixar has a trick up their sleeve that's sure to heavily divide the Toy Story die-hards.

Though James Brolin does a solid job voicing the villain, ultimately the direction that Zurg's characterisation takes feels derivative of a number of sci-fi and superhero movies of recent times, while tinkering with established Toy Story lore in ways fans may find frustrating.

It doesn't help that Zurg's introduced relatively late in the movie, not showing up properly until the end of the second act, and even then his presence here will surely sharply polarise the fanbase.
