Lightyear Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
2. The Humour Is Incredibly Hit & Miss
Even the most serious-minded Pixar movies have a well-developed funny bone, and so it's incredibly rare for their films to prove this uneven on the comedy front.
There are certainly hilarious moments throughout Lightyear, yet the script's gags are generally far more hit-and-miss than expected from the studio, with many one-liners failing to land with the desired, gut-busting impact.
The humour generally feels very mid-brow at best and often outright unsophisticated, bar a few inspired sight gags and slivers of dialogue.
In conjunction with the relatively generic space adventure story, this ensures that Lightyear lacks the special sauce audiences expect from even mid-tier Pixar movies.
Pixar has proven that their films don't need to be gag-a-minute chuckle-fests, but their signature sly wit is sorely missed through much of this effort.
