Lightyear Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
5. Chris Evans' Terrific Performance As Buzz
Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear to the extent that replacing him is so extremely tricky, and so Chris Evans' inspired casting feels like a minor masterstroke.
Evans' calm yet authoritative voiceover does justice to both Buzz's integrity and sneakily sardonic side, undeniably informed by his prior portrayal as Captain America - a character who, as it turns out, has an unexpected amount in common with Buzz throughout this story.
Evans had tough shoes to fill here but has done a mostly bang-up job making this version of the character his own even while feeling recognisably cut from the same cloth as his forebear.
There are sure to be those who wish Allen simply played the part himself, but Evans manages to bring just enough of his own spin to the role to make this iteration of Buzz feel appropriately same-but-different.
