Lightyear Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
3. The Amusing Fan Service & Easter Eggs
At the end of the day, if you're a Toy Story fan - and, if not, you're probably not watching this - you're going to get at least some periodic chuckles out of the many, many Easter eggs, references, and general fan service thrown your way.
Sure, some of it isn't particularly smart or clever - such as having Evans' Buzz recite the action figure's most beloved one-liners - but the sheer abundance of visual nods to the Toy Story movies at least makes it clear that this was a film constructed with a major fondness for the IP (script issues notwithstanding).
Older viewers will also get a kick out of the many references to the '90s time period in which the movie was made, such as the A.I. module for Buzz's ship resembling a SNES video game cartridge, which Buzz even has to blow on. This is just one example, but there are many more throughout.
While Lightyear doesn't offer up a ton of rewatch value, some will at least relish the opportunity to pore back over every last frame in pursuit of all those sneaky Easter eggs when it hits Disney+ in the near-future.
