Logan: 10 Reasons It Blows Deadpool Away

1. It Isn't Required To Setup A Sequel

While Deadpool thankfully wasn't overly concerned with tethering itself to the X-Men universe, it still had to be mindful to at least nod to a sequel, even if it was done in thoroughly tongue-in-cheek style.

Logan conversely is essentially a standalone movie and so has absolutely zero responsibility to set up more films. Yes, Laura may get her own film in the future, but the movie courageously commits fully to this being Logan's final film, even definitively killing the character off with no lingering hope for his return.

Logan will eventually be recast and that's Fox's prerogative, but the book was firmly closed here, and it was clearly an extreme creative liberation for James Mangold, Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in particular.

Deadpool wasn't exactly playing it safe either, but it's a franchise very much in its infancy and so needs to tow Fox's corporate line for now (hence its fairly generic antagonists, romance and narrative through-line).
