Logan: 10 Reasons It Blows Deadpool Away
6. Hugh Jackman's Oscar-Worthy Performance
The acting in Deadpool is rock solid for the most part, and Ryan Reynolds gives an excellent, Golden Globe-nominated rendition of the title character, but it's just not quite up to the same challenging standard as Hugh Jackman's phenomenal work in Logan.
It helps of course that Jackman is bringing a wealth of history and dramatic baggage with him, which gives him a sure advantage out of the gate. We've been with Logan on this journey, but even accepting that, Jackman gives easily his most grizzled, tortured performance as the character to date, and the results are most certainly worthy of Oscar recognition (not that it'll happen).
Logan is further advantaged here because it's trading in heavy themes and isn't flippant like Deadpool, but such is the trade-off: a frothy, fast-paced, meta comedy action film compared to a neo-western drama with action trimmings. One is always going to tease out more dramatically potent performances than the other.
