Logan: 15 Most Brutal Moments That Earned Its R-Rating

6. The Munsons

Halfway through the film, James Mangold pulls the absolute masterstroke of reminding his audience that the world is still turning for normal people - that despite the mutant decimations, mankind continues to live through mundanities and habitual routines. And it's those behaviours that add such a comforting note to Charles, Logan and Laura's night with the welcoming family, because they can pretend to be just as normal.

And then, because this is a dark and stormy world where not even invincible heroes are safe, we get a stark reminder of the brutality of the Weapon X programme when X-24 turns up with a bang, spilling young Nate Munson's guts, opening his mother's throat and stabbing his father and throwing him down the stairs.

It's a harrowing reminder of the stakes Logan faces and the fragility of human life, as well as the final confirmation that Logan and Laura can't ever hope for that sort of interrupted normalcy. Mangold could have achieved that by killing Charles only, but the fact that he piled the Munsons' bodies on for effect really elevated the scene to nightmarish territory.
