Jesus Christ, that stings.

Just as Charles Xavier's confession and death was utterly gut-wrenching, the final moments for Logan as his life drains out of his body and Laura tries to console him are the hardest things to watch in the entire film.

Having built up their relationship as a difficult and defiant one, Logan's exterior cracks towards the end and you begin to realise he feels some paternal protective instincts towards the kids who look up to him as a sort of Mad Max saviour figure. When he's berserker running to save them, he's running to save his children, and Laura at the top of that heart-wrenching pyramid. When he takes X-24's blades, every time he's doing it for the sake of his kids who would feel them if he didn't.

And then, as he lays dying, Laura's sorrowful "daddy" is the final gut punch to that devastating arc, as he reveals in his final words that despite everything the X-Men and Charles gave him, he never truly felt love or a sense of family until she said that. "So that's what that feels like" might well be the most perfect, melancholic final words of any dying hero ever.

Like I said, that stings...
