In the scene that sees Laura stealing (unaware of the morality of it) from the store, Wolverine himself breaks the law despite telling her she's wrong to steal.

After taking a phone charger (small payment for saving the cashier's life), he grabs a handful of cigars.

He might have stopped that particular habit in the later movies but cigars were as big a part of his character as his claws. And it's a nice little nod.
