Though it's not entirely explained in the film, the inference is that Charles Xavier's mental instability led to a seizure that killed 7 members of the X-Men.

Westchester is the location of the X Mansion, suggesting his first seizure killed his own students and in their home.

That slightly inverts the comic book, in which Logan is manipulated by Mysterio to believe that the X Mansion is being attacked by 40 assailants. He slays them only to find they are actually his team-mates.
