Logan Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs

1. It Benefits Massively From Being Standalone

One of Logan's greatest assets is that it's almost a totally standalone film, providing only vague references to events from previous X-Men movies and having no responsibility to set up yet another film.

Yes, an X-23 film may happen, but there's a pronounced feeling here that Jackman and Stewart are committed to their retirement from their characters, and this really does feel like the perfect leaping-off point.

Logan is to that end a testament to movies that aren't part of a complex cinematic tapestry but able to function largely on their own without overt consideration for what studio executives want.

In short, more superhero movies could benefit from taking a singular, "what if?" approach to continuity, especially in a franchise like X-Men where the timeline is borderline incomprehensible anyway.
