Oscars 2016: 8 Awards Contenders To Look Out For At The London Film Festival

1. Beasts Of No Nation

What's It In The Running For? Best Picture, Best Director (Cary Fukunaga), Best Actor (Idris Elba) Biggest Hope: Best Director (Cary Fukunaga) Beasts Of No Nation is going to be a big film no matter how good it actually is. The first movie produced by Netflix, and released primarily on their streaming service (although there will be a slight cinema release to tick those Oscar eligibility boxes), making it an absolutely ground-breaking step in cinema. But that won't be why it wins Oscars (because that'd be stupid). Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the genius behind the landmark True Detective (Season 1 only), there's a lot of excitement over how he'll handle the film's aesthetic and deal with a very touchy subject of child soldiers in a West African civil war. Even if there's nothing in here to quite rival TD's six-minute tracking shot, you can bet there'll be astounding creativity in the film. There's also room for an Actor nod for Idris Elba as a war commander as well as Best Picture, but they're both very competitive categories, and it certainly seems like Fukunaga is the film's biggest star.
