London Film Festival Day 5: Voyage Of Time, Bleed For This, Certain Women & More

Legendary "mockumentarian" Christopher Guest mines the weird world of sports mascots for his latest comedy, an occasionally off-note but mostly solid effort with a superb cast.

At once drawing amusing attention to the ridiculousness of this line of work while also affectionately commending the subjects' unflappable determination towards winning the World Mascot Association Championships, there's laughs, there's sadness and, above all else, the film touches ably on the universal desire to succeed and to be loved.

The cast is the real winner, though, including the terrific likes of Jane Lynch, Ed Begley Jr., Fred Willard, Parker Posey, Zach Woods, Chris O’Dowd and Sarah Baker. While this isn't the finest work of anyone involved, they all nevertheless deliver fun riffs as their often agonisingly awkward characters (Woods in particular is just terrific).

And the best part of all? It's released directly to Netflix on October 13th, so you can watch it in the comfort of your own home without paying an extra penny.

Rating: It may not be the laugh riot many would hope for, but Guest still serves up an entertaining examination of a truly bizarre subject. 6/10
