London Film Festival Day 5: Voyage Of Time, Bleed For This, Certain Women & More
2. Certain Women
Kelly Reichardt's (Wendy and Lucy, Night Moves) sixth film does little to reinvigorate her typically divisive filmmaking style, but a strong ensemble cast nevertheless keeps her latest effort on the right side of watchable.
Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and fantastic newcomer Lily Gladstone play put-upon women living in the sleepy town of Livingstone, Montana, and though they only get around 25 minutes of screen time each in this low-key anthology film, Reichardt does a commendable job bleeding out their hopes, fears and desires.
The pace is undeniably slow and as such the film won't be to all tastes out of the gate, employing minimalist dialogue and relying more on loaded glances between characters, but as an acting showcase, it's nevertheless a compelling (if slightly overlong) sit for the most part.
Rating: While it's perhaps not one of Reichardt's better films, Certain Women still continues to distinguish her as a vital, singular cinematic voice. If Gladstone continues to take alluring role like this, she could have quite the career alongside her more famous co-stars. 6/10
