Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Scenes NOT From The Books

5. Bilbo Lunges For Frodo - The Fellowship Of The Ring

When Frodo reaches Rivendell, he reunites with his uncle, Bilbo. At first, the two Baggins are delighted to see each other alive and well. But after Bilbo sees Frodo bears The One Ring, he becomes noticeably agitated.

Suddenly, the power of the Ring urges Bilbo to lunge at him, his face contorting into a grotesque snarl. Only in this moment does Bilbo realise how much the Ring has consumed him, causing him to burst into tears.

This is a great scene (and Bilbo's face is responsible for creating so much nightmare fuel) but it's not from the book. Even though it's a small addition, it packs quite a punch. Witnessing how the Ring has corrupted his loveable uncle, Frodo's duty as the Ringbearer feels more personal. It also makes his journey more heartbreaking since it gives Frodo a taste of what is to become of him if he allows the Ring's evil to seep into his mind.

This little moment also has a nice pay-off in the story's climax. When Bilbo asks about the Ring after Frodo destroyed it, his nephew pretends it's been lost This time, Bilbo barely reacts, proving he's no longer shackled by the Ring's malevolent power.
