Lord Of The Rings: 10 Things Only TRUE Fans Understand

1. The Eagles Couldn't Just Fly To Mount Doom

Lord of the rings
New Line Cinema

When Gandalf tasks Frodo with the destruction of The One Ring, the hobbit leaves his home and heads to Mt. Doom since that is the only place where the Ring can be destroyed. During his journey, Frodo travels a staggering 1,350 miles.

This journey is so arduous, many people who have read the book or seen the movie have pointed out how unnecessarily dangerous it is.

On two occasions, it is shown that Gandalf has befriended a group of giant Eagles. Why didn't he just use one of the Eagles to travel to Mt. Doom? Frodo's journey took him over a year. If Gandalf used the Eagles, he could have flown to the volcano in a few days.

This is considered to be the biggest plothole in the story, but it does have an explanation.

Gandalf entrusted a hobbit with The One Ring because they're considered to be the purest beings, and so, the least likely to be corrupted by the Ring’s evil.

If The Eagles or Gandalf were corrupted by The One Ring, the birds would have flown straight to Sauron’s castle and he would’ve reclaimed his power.

So, there you go. The trilogy’s biggest plothole isn’t a plothole after all.
