Film: The Return of the King How he died: The ring was destroyed The destruction of the ring not only brought down Sauron and Mount Doom, but it also caused the death of the eight remaining Nazgûl which were sent to look for Frodo and the One Ring. Without the strength of the ring to help Sauron, he only exists in the form of a spirit, too weak to carry on and unable to ever return. Sauron was in power for far too long and it was refreshing for Tolkien to pick an unlikely hero. The evil of Middle Earth was brought down by two hobbits who hadn't even left their home before this journey. It is true that even the smallest person can change the course of the future.
