Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit: Every Major Death RANKED
7. Saruman - Return Of The King Extended Edition
This article has already discussed the first casualty of this sequence, but now it is time to examine the demise of the central figure. Saruman was a powerful villain in the Two Towers and a severe antagonistic threat in the entire trilogy. Therefore he had to go out with the right amount of fanfare, and thankfully he does.
After mistreating Grima for the last time, Saruman is stabbed by his servant and soon falls off of the tower of Orthanc and plummets. When he finally reaches the ground, he lands on a spiked piece of machinery and is gruesomely impaled upon it.
This is incredibly poetic, as Saruman exists in the story to preach a cautionary tale about abusing nature. As such, it feels thoroughly appropriate for him to die upon one of his unnatural creations.
The biggest issue with this scene comes in the fact that it was only part of the extended edition of the film. While there are arguments to be made for cutting the scene, many viewers felt robbed by not seeing what happened to the central villain of the second film in the theatrical cut.
With a death scene this good, it is no wonder that many fans wish it were part of the default version.
